Orphan (2009) Opening Analysis

The film ‘Orphan’ doesn’t give the audience the exact genre of the film with in the opening sequence, however it does suggest there will be lots of blood and violence throughout the film which is implied straight away. The opening titles fit with the tone as the black and white creates a dark atmosphere which then flickers and alternates between a creepy child made version. The previous screens with Warner Brothers and Dark Castle Entertainment also used the same technique. I like this technique, it creates a sense of uneasiness, however for my opening I wouldn't use this technique as there are no children in the opening so it would be a bit irrelevant. The splattering of the paint could symbolise blood and foreshadow the violence to come later in the film. The sound effects of a thunderstorm accompany the opening credits which indicates that there may be danger ahead and creates the tone of suspense and mystery. I like the first version shown of the titles which are grey and would like to somehow incorporate that font and colour design into my opening. I also like the way the main titles then fade into a white screen to continue on with the story and think that when I create my own opening I would like to do the same.
