How does the opening of the ‘City of God’ set the tone, genre and themes through the use of micro elements?

In the opening of ‘City of God’ the most evident theme that is presented is violence. The use of sound is a foreshadowing idea of the violence that will appear throughout the film. Before the visual frames appear there is already sound effects of knives which implies murder or other acts of violence yet to come in the film. To compare to the knife sound effects, lively music has been added to confuse the audience as it’s a juxtaposition of good and bad. The music helps create the carnival like atmosphere which repels the ideas of death like the knives suggest. The fast-paced editing is timed with the music to create tension and worry for the chicken, this is implied violence as it seems to all build up and join together when the chicken’s about to get caught for slaughter. Therefore the use of diegetic sound, accompanied by the fast paced editing creates the overall feeling of tension, which leads to confusion and finally, violence.
